ACT Group Classes

Our ACT classes remain the single most popular option that students choose for ACT prep. Some students do the class by itself, while others will do the class before their first ACT exam, followed by a small amount of 1-on-1 tutoring before the second exam.

Group classes are intentionally built backward from the test date so that students take the test while the material is fresh. It is strongly recommended that students take the exam immediately following the course.

“A Team” Tutors

All classes are taught exclusively by the company’s two founders who have over 66,000 hours of combined tutoring experience and take the test yearly.

Great Students

We have cultivated a word-of-mouth client base of passionate students who are serious about increasing their scores, which includes doing homework. This can-do philosophy improves the classroom environment for everyone.

Solid Score Increases

Our group classes achieve larger score increases than the big-box companies’ private tutoring programs, which are often led by inexperienced college student tutors. We publish all of our results!

ACT Class Structure and Description

  • The traditional school year class consists of 18 hours of classroom instruction, as well as two timed, graded mock ACT exams (a diagnostic mock test at the beginning, and a second mock ACT exam midway through the course). Students who do the best tend to do significant homework between the class and the actual test. Smaller bites of material each week allow students to keep their eye on the GPA prize while fitting in their ACT prep!
  • During the summer, to accommodate vacation, sports, and travel schedules, we do a flipped format summer class that is like attending school for several days. Students love being able to build the foundation and then commence practicing around other summer obligations.
  • For our group classes, we keep classes engaging with two-way material, real-life examples, and short quizzes to test newly-learned concepts.
  • Parents are strongly encouraged to check in with their students weekly to monitor homework progress; each week’s homework assignment is uploaded to the website at the end of each class.  All of our 300+ ACT classes throughout the years have seen the highest-improving student improve at least 6-9+ points more than the lowest-improving student, and homework volume/homework completion drives over 90% of that difference. Parents who make the homework “due to mom and dad” before each class are rarely not in the top 10% of score increase results.
  • It is strongly recommended that students take the exam immediately following the course, while the material is fresh.
  • Calculators: We highly recommend that students bring a TI-84 model graphing calculator (specifically a TI-84 CE) to the ACT Class. The optimal math strategies we teach for the math section are based on the TI-84 CE calculator because most high-scoring students use this calculator and because the TI-84 CE’s operating system has newer functionality that allows students who typically struggle with timing to move through certain questions much more quickly. If your student has a TI-83 or TI-84 Plus, but a younger sibling has the TI-84CE, please have him or her trade calculators with the younger sibling. There are many valuable features on the 84CE that are not on the 83 or 84 Plus that especially impact those in the 28-36 math score range. At a bare minimum, students should use a TI-83 or TI-84, and not a TI-30, TI-36, or the like. Those students who are unfamiliar with how to use a TI-84 should consider obtaining and begin familiarizing themselves with that calculator in advance of class beginning so that they can hit the ground running! Also, please note that the TI-89, TI-92, and TI NSpire CAS that some high schools recommend are actually prohibited on the ACT.

ACT Class Frequently Asked Questions

We get this question weekly, and the answer is yes. The quality and experience of the tutor matter far more than the number of hours in the class or style of tutoring. Our founders are the two most experienced SAT/ACT tutors in Georgia by a wide margin, and as a result, our group class is far more effective than private tutoring with an inexperienced college student whom a big-box tutoring agency might send to your house (and who typically pays that person just 1/9 to 1/5 of what you pay the company!). We regularly get feedback from parents that just the first Edison Prep class was more effective than months of prior preparation with a big-box agency tutor.

We also provide private tutoring for those who prefer that option. Approximately 92% of Edison Prep students either do the group class alone or set up a “hybrid schedule” in which students do a class before the first exam and a small amount of fine-tuning private tutoring between the first and second SAT and ACT exam.

ACT Classes are the standard-length course that we offer. The abbreviated ACT Bootcamps contain the most important 8 hours of the 18 hours in the ACT Class, and cover highlights that are very helpful for those navigating the 1-25 ACT score range. ACT Classes have 18 hours of instruction and allow students to delve more deeply into all of the sections. Students who are shooting for a 30 or above and/or are considering UGA (UGA’s overall average score is a 32, and UGA’s Early Action admits have a middle 50% ACT of 31-34) should strongly err on the side of the longer-format ACT Class, since many of the math concepts that matter only in the 27-36 score range for math (the top 13% of the score curve) are not able to be covered in the abbreviated Bootcamp format.

ACT Classes are optimal for students who are looking for a more affordable alternative to 1-on-1 private tutoring, and/or families who like the accountability and structure of weekly homework assignments over the course of 6-7 weeks. These classes are optimally designed for students with initial ACT scores between 19 and 29. That said, even students with starting scores of 30 are still missing over 40 questions and would still be appropriate for the class. At least two students in each class typically start off at a score of 30+.

  • “The Bulb” (Edison Prep’s very own ACT guide, updated annually, now in its 13th edition)
  • 6 real full-length ACTs. If students run out, we are happy to give them more! Hard work and raw practice test volume is the biggest driver of improvement!
  • Additional Edison Prep handouts and practice materials

We’ve made our classes more flexible! We typically have 3-4 classes for each test cycle, and if a student has a conflict for one or more class dates for the class they’re interested in, for that class:

  • At a minimum, your student can come to the virtual class that most closely corresponds with their usual class they’d miss (or even attend their normal in-person class virtually if they’re out of town but available!)
  • At a maximum, if the other class doesn’t fully fill, then your student can come in person! We have students check with us a few days before the class in question to double-check!

If neither of those options works:

  • Private tutoring can be purchased to make up a missed group session and/or to supplement group instruction, or
  • The pages covered and homework for each class are added to our website at the end of each class. Students who have to miss can read those pages, attempt the homework and hit the ground running at the next class. View class homework >
  • Students are expected to arrive to all sessions and mock tests on time with all of their books, pencils and a graphing calculator.
  • Students will be expected to put in at least an equal amount of time outside of class each week as in it to get optimal results. For students with lower starting scores and/or very ambitious score-increase goals, more time outside of class is highly recommended.
